SACRAMENTO – Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) today was honored by Donate Life California as their Outstanding Legislator of the Year alongside Senator Elaine Alquist (D-Silicon Valley). Pérez was given the award for his commitment to authoring legislation that helps save lives through organ donation. Pérez authored Assembly Bill 2352, a bill signed into law that extends the time Medi-Cal beneficiaries are eligible to receive coverage for anti-rejection medication from one year to two years following an organ transplant.
"This award is very special because it draws attention to a topic that is close to me," Pérez said. "Before her death, my mother was on kidney dialysis for seven years. As I sat with her during her treatments, I saw so many faces over and over again—people of every age, every background and from all walks of life trying to survive long enough for an organ to become available. When my father passed away, he had his organs donated. In that painful moment when we said goodbye, I was deeply comforted in knowing that my father would be able to give people he’d never even met a second chance at life."
"We are honored by the work of Speaker Pérez and Senator Alquist in helping Donate Life California to save lives through the Donate Life Organ & Tissue Donor Registry," Lisa Stocks, president of Donate Life California said. "With more than 21,000 Californians waiting for the gift of life, we must ensure that every single donor’s wishes are honored, and that every organ transplant recipient is given the opportunity to survive and thrive with a new lease on life."
"When you sign up to be an organ donor, what you’re really doing is donating life, and I wrote AB 2352 to make sure that this precious gift isn’t thrown away for lack of basic medication," Pérez added. "The work of Donate Life California to promote organ and tissue donation has given many Californians a new lease on life that simply wouldn’t be possible without their continued efforts. I am very thankful to be recognized by such an important organization."
