SACRAMENTO – At their organizational caucus today Assembly Democrats unanimously chose Speaker Toni G. Atkins to continue as their party's leader.

“I am honored that my colleagues in the Assembly Democratic Caucus have put their faith in me to continue serving as Speaker of the Assembly,” Speaker Atkins (D-San Diego) said. “It is especially nice to have support from both the colleagues I have worked closely with and from new members elected on Tuesday who are already eager to start serving the people of their districts. Last session the Legislature had big successes with the budget, water and helping California companies compete. This year we will build on those successes and continue working to make sure California has good jobs and a strong economy, and is a safe, healthy and affordable place to live and work.”

Nominating Speaker Atkins today were Assemblymembers Adam Gray (D-Merced), Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood), and Rob Bonta (D-Alameda).

The members of the Legislature for the 2015-16 session will be sworn in at 12 p.m. on December 1 in the State Capitol. Assembly Democrats will officially nominate Speaker Atkins to continue serving as Speaker of the Assembly at that time.
