AB 182 by Assemblymember Luis Alejo (D-Salinas) passed the Assembly Floor on a 53-25 vote. This bill would expand the California Voting Rights Act of 2001 to allow challenges to district-based elections that are being imposed or applied in a manner that impairs the ability of a protected class of voters to elect candidates of their choice. AB 349 by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) passed the Housing Committee on a 7-0 vote. AB 573 by Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) and Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) passed the Higher Education Committee on Wednesday and, on a 74-0 vote, the Assembly Floor on Thursday. AB 573 would provide relief for Corinthian Colleges students facing serious educational and financial setbacks due to the for-profit college system shutting down. AB 888 by Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) passed the Appropriations Committee on Wednesday on a 12-4 vote. This bill would ban micro-plastic particle abrasives, commonly referred to as “micro beads,” from being used in products such as facial scrubs, soaps, and toothpaste. AB 1228 by Assemblymember Mike Gipson (D-Compton) and Speaker Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) passed the Assembly Floor on a 76-2 vote. AB 1228 would provide priority campus housing to current and former foster and homeless youth and require that housing is provided for homeless youth during academic breaks.
