Gussie Zaks, Survivor - AD 76

Assemblymember Toni Atkins
76th District

San Diego
Student: Amalia Bersin

Gussie Zaks was born in 1925 in Poland. At age 13, Gussie and her family were forced from their home by the Nazis. Gussie was moved to several concentration camps before ending up at the Treblinka death camp in Poland. She was kept as a prisoner for over 5 years, and was liberated in 1946 shortly after Anne Frank died in the very same camp. Gussie lost her parents and six siblings during the war, so she went to live with her aunt in Sweden afterwards. She met her husband Mike in Belgium and they moved together to New York where they began their family. They moved again to San Diego in 1963 with their two young children, and have lived in the area ever since.
