SACRAMENTO – First District Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro (D-North Coast) today thanked Gov. Jerry Brown for acting swiftly to help alleviate some of the economic hardship caused by the tsunami that wreaked havoc on California coastal communities last week.
“Earlier this morning I asked Governor Brown to waive the one-week waiting period normally required to start collecting unemployment insurance for those who lost their jobs or may lose their jobs as a result of the devastation caused by the tsunami surges last week in California,” Chesbro said. “The governor acted swiftly and issued a proclamation granting a waiver of the waiting period within hours of my request. In the midst of some of the most crucial budget negotiations in the state’s history, this governor acted decisively and swiftly to help working Californians in their time of need. Thank you, Governor Brown.”
The proclamation covers Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino counties in the First Assembly District in addition to three other counties where the governor has declared a state of emergency because of tsunami damage. The proclamation also allows for the expedited hiring of emergency and cleanup workers and directs the California Franchise Tax Board and Board of Equalization to “make appropriate accommodations for those affected” by the tsunami.
