Chesbro considers options after veto of tsunami relief bill

SACRAMENTO – Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bill by Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro (D-North Coast) which would have ensured that Del Norte County be reimbursed for the estimated $1.3 million in local recovery costs incurred by the tsunami that occurred on March 11. Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro (D-North Coast) released the following statement:

"As the author of AB 1429, I am deeply disappointed in the Governor's veto and my heart goes out to all those who continue to be affected by the damage the March 2011 tsunami caused. I worked very hard to get this bill through the Senate and the Assembly overwhelmingly with bipartisan support."

"At this time, I am considering all my options to reverse the Governor's veto. Nothing can happen before the Legislature reconvenes in January and a two-thirds vote from both houses of the Legislature would be required to override a veto. Veto overrides have historically not been successful. Specifically, the last successful attempt to override a veto occurred 32 years ago."
