5th Graders Win Canned Food Drive Competition

Sacramento - Assemblymember Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento) announced at a press conference at the State Capitol that Sacramento's local 5th graders have beat out the California State Legislature in his canned food drive competition. Dickinson teamed up with several local 5th grade classes for a competition called "Can you collect more cans than a 5th grader?" Legislators and the Capitol community have participated in the month-long challenge. "More than ever, we need to reach out to help our neighbors when the holidays approach. I am proud of our Sacramento kids. They have really embraced the challenge. Thank you to everyone who generously contributed and helped needy families," Dickinson said. All canned food donations (6,982 cans total) are going to "Operation Gobble", a local program that delivers over 900 turkeys to needy families throughout Sacramento. Assemblymember Dickinson Examining Unprecedented Closure of State Parks

Sacramento - Today, Assemblymember Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento) and Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) convened a joint hearing of the Committees on Accountability & Administrative Review and Water, Parks & Wildlife to review the process surrounding the state's unprecedented move to shut down 70 of its 279 state parks and to provide an update on efforts around the state to keep parks open.

"Today, the Committees obtained a better understanding of the ramifications of closing a quarter of our state parks – few people and few communities will not be touched by the loss of a favorite retreat or a vibrant piece of their local economy," Dickinson said.

"We also heard about innovative ways in which communities are attempting to keep parks open. Coming up with creative solutions to keep parks open in these times of continued budget cuts is a resourceful way of reducing the constant threats to our vital state parks."

The hearing allowed the California Department of Parks and Recreation to provide the latest information on the state parks' closures, and its efforts to work with community groups interested in keeping some of the parks open. The Committees also reviewed how the Department chose the parks slated for closure next year and explored legal or other liabilities that may come into play. Local and regional park associations, law enforcement, environmental organizations and business groups also weighed in on how the pending closures will affect them.

California employs more than 1,800 permanent and approximately 805 seasonal staff to administer, protect, operate and maintain the state park system. In 2010, 65 million people visited a California state park.
