Assemblywoman Bonilla's bill streamlines the review of textbooks provides efficiency to local school districts
Concord, CA - Assembly Bill 339, authored by Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla (D-Concord), was signed by Governor Jerry Brown today. AB 339 will streamline the review of textbook content to ensure that updated textbooks, with historically accurate information, are in classrooms. Specifically, AB 339 requires the State Board of Education to once again enact a process to govern the social content review of instructional materials by authorizing the State Board of Education to contract with county offices of Education to perform this review.
"As a former teacher, I know firsthand the importance of accurate and up to date textbooks," said Assemblywoman Bonilla. "Content review ensures that our children's text books are historically accurate and free of inappropriate material."
AB 339 will help maintain costs and consistency for our local school districts. Without this bill, local school districts will be left to conduct their own costly review of instructional materials for out-of-cycle social content.
"Schools in my district and across the state want to use additional textbooks and this bill will streamline innovative textbooks straight into the classroom," said Bonilla. "As a teacher, I was always looking for new ways to engage my students. AB 339 brings new and innovative materials into the classroom."
Without this bill, local school districts will face an additional burden as well as inconsistencies in social content from district to district. To cover the cost, this bill allows a fee to be charged to the text book company. AB 339 will go into effect on January 1, 2012.
