Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla in full support of California's participation in the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge

Concord (CA) – With the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge (RTT-ELC) application deadline a few days away, Governor Brown has agreed to submit an application on behalf of the state. The RTT-ELC grant competition will distribute $700 million among selected states to improve early learning and development programs for young children. If selected, California could be awarded $100 million.

"As Chair of the Select Committee on High Quality Early Childhood Education, I have submitted a letter of support to be included in California's RTT-ELC application, which provides an extraordinary opportunity to compete for federal funding. Given the tough fiscal challenges the state is facing and the recent devastating cuts made to education, in the last couple of years alone, this funding is necessary to expand and improve our early education programs," said Assemblywoman Bonilla.

There have been countless studies and reports that clearly demonstrate the numerous benefits children receive from developmentally appropriate early academic programs, which set a foundation for school and life success. Specifically, a 2009 report by the Bay Area Council concluded that "investments in high-quality educational experiences during the years from birth to age five significantly improve not only school achievement, but also a range of social and economic outcomes throughout life.".

"I was pleased to learn that the Governor has agreed to apply on behalf of our young children; this is a significant opportunity that we are being provided with and we could not afford to pass it up," said Assemblywoman Bonilla.
