Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco) today issued the following statement on Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed budget:
“Our sage and shrewd Governor is once again taking the long view on our State’s fiscal health, and Sutter Brown’s paw print makes a compelling emotional case for restraint. I too hope we have enough dog biscuits set aside for the inevitable recession. And on issues ranging from health care and education to immigration and climate change, Governor Brown today inspired confidence that he is prepared to respond to the Trump era. In particular, I fully support the Governor’s call to make the Cap and Trade program permanent with a 2/3 vote of the Legislature.
On housing, the Governor’s proposal offers nothing new to millions of Californians who struggle every month to pay the rent or to find a home they can afford. The $400 million set aside last year for housing is gone. He repeated his position that the answer is to streamline housing approvals, and I share the perspective that many jurisdictions around our state are not doing enough to build homes for our residents, especially in areas where job growth is dramatically outpacing housing creation. But the market alone will never solve the housing crisis for struggling Californians, and that is why I joined some of my Assembly colleagues to propose new funding for affordable housing that will not impact the general fund. I am committed this year to engaging with the Governor’s office, my colleagues, and everyone who cares about housing to make real progress on a crisis that affects so many people and saddles the Golden State with the nation’s highest poverty rate.
Finally, the upcoming Presidential transition makes me grateful that we have a leader with the experience and vision of Governor Brown to work with all of us to fight for California values in these uncertain times. I am confident we can show that progressive leadership works.”
