SACRAMENTO—Assemblymember Fong (D-Cupertino) was honored by the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project (CHCP) with the 2011 President's Award. This award is presented to a person of Chinese descent who exemplifies commitment to leadership in promoting and preserving Chinese American history and culture.
"I am honored to receive the 2011 President's Award," said Assemblymember Fong. "We must continue to play an active role in leading our communities in order to best promote, educate, and preserve our Chinese culture and history for our children in California and throughout the U.S."
Assemblymember Fong has been chosen by the CHCP for this honor for authoring ACR 42, offering California's formal apology for racist laws against the Chinese Community. With 30 years of activism for the Asian Pacific Islander Community, his other accomplishments include being a founding member of the Asian Americans for Community Involvement, helping numerous API elected officials reach public office, and advocating for equality and social justice for the API Community.
The CHCP is based in Santa Clara County, California. It was founded in 1987 as a non-profit organization to promote and preserve Chinese American and Chinese history and culture through community outreach activities. The leadership of the organization is comprised of volunteers -- Officers, Board of Directors, and Advisory Board. A Board of Trustees oversees the major maintenance of the Ng Shing Gung Museum with the City of San Jose and History San Jose.
