Joined by Volunteers in Ulistac Natural Area Restoration
SANTA CLARA—Assemblymember Paul Fong (D-Cupertino) and NBC Bay Area joined almost 200 volunteers at Ulistac Natural Area to clean up trash and restore the park’s habitat to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is an annual national event where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to improve lives, bridge barriers, and empower communities in order to create a just and peaceful world as Dr. King envisioned. Dr. King’s teachings of community service, helping your neighbors, and nonviolence, can resolve problems, such as poverty, inadequate education, and prejudice. The 2012 King Day of Service is chance for all everyone to practice the teachings of Dr. King and cultivate healthy relationships with other members of their community.
“It is an honor to represent and work alongside members of this great community,” says Assemblymember Fong. “It’s a testament to Dr. King’s legacy, that after so many years since his passing, his influence and teachings still resonate and we all can be part of a national event to make our communities stronger. I am proud to have partnered with NBC Bay Area to celebrate Dr. King. As an advocate for community service, I am proud of everyone who selflessly worked today.”
Ulistac Natural Area is the last 40 acres of open space in the City of Santa Clara. It was designated a city park on January 20, 1997. People often visit Ulistac to learn about native plants and ecology, bird watch, jog, walk their dogs, and to enjoy the outdoors. Volunteers are hard at work creating a Butterfly Garden of 700 California native shrubs. Future habitat restoration will create additional oak woodlands, as well as Sycamore and riparian woodlands.
Assemblymember Fong serves as Chair of the Elections and Redistricting Committee and is a member of the Higher Education, Utilities and Commerce, and Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committees. In addition, Assemblymember Fong serves as Chair of the Select Committees on High Technology and Climate Change and Coastal Protection and is a member of the Select Committees on Biotechnology, Career Technical Education and Workforce Development, Community Colleges, Government Efficiency, Technology and Innovation, Homelessness, Job Creation for the New Economy and Regional Strategies for the Green Economy.
