Representing the 28th District
Minimum wage is one of those hot-button issues that generate rhetoric on both sides of the debate. Conservatives shout that it is government over-reach into the free market, which left alone will somehow compensate employees adequately. Liberals make the plea that unethical businesses will work their employees into servitude to support lavish bonuses and return handsome returns to investors.
Assemblyman Luis A. Alejo, D-Salinas, might have hit on a compromise that will satisfy all but the most extreme of the two ideologies: annual cost-of-living adjustments to the minimum wage.
