(SACRAMENTO, CA) Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield (D-San Fernando Valley) honored 89- year old Clyde East of Oak Park today during the California State Assembly's 4th Annual Veteran of the Year ceremony for his 24 distinguished years of service in the United States Air Force.
"Lt. Colonel East has lived an incredible life of service," said Blumenfield. "He's a true patriot and a treasure in our community."
As a member of the Air Force, East piloted combat missions during World War II and the Korean War. He flew over Utah and Omaha beaches on D-Day in 1944 and later flew over Cuba in 1962 where his squadron verified the construction of nuclear missiles by the former Soviet Union. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1965. After his service, East worked as a military analyst at the RAND Corporation for over 28 years.
From an early age, East aspired to a military career as a pilot. After graduating high school in 1941, East was too young to join the Air Force. So, he got his pilot wings in 1942 through the Royal Canadian Air Force where he completed numerous combat missions over France, Belgium, Holland and the English Channel. East transferred to the U.S. Air Force in 1944.
East maintains contact with many of his Air Force friends. He is an active member of many active duty and retired military organizations, including the American Fighter Aces Association, the American Legion, and the Valley's-own Wings over Wendy's. He now works as a volunteer docent at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library/Museum, the American Cancer society, and St. Jude's Catholic Church in Westlake Village.
Over 50 veterans from across California were honored during today's event, which included a luncheon with legislators and veterans supporters. Blumenfield presented East with an Assembly Certificate honoring his accomplishments.
