Report Highlighting Health Disparities Among Asian Americans And Pacific Islanders Unveiled

(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park), has unveiled "The State of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Health in California" report, which details the studies and findings by the University of California Asian American and Pacific Islander Policy Multi- Campus Research Program. The report shows that some AANHPI ethnic groups are at higher risks of some illnesses compared to the rest of the population; while other AANHPI subgroups have been rarely studied - if at all. The report seeks to provide valuable healthcare information to local and state policymakers, primary and secondary care providers, as well as for other organizations seeking to better serve this growing and diverse community. Here's more in this Assembly Access video.

Some key findings detailed in the report are:

  • AANHPIs in California today number over five million and comprise over 14% of the population, making this minority group one of the fastest growing populations in the state.
  • AANHPIs are the only group for whom the leading cause of death is cancer.
  • Samoan children have the largest percentage (54%) of children in California whose body mass index (BMI) is not within the Healthy Fitness Zone.
  • Koreans have the highest rate of uninsured individuals (33%) of any racial/ethnic group in the state - far outpacing the state average of uninsured adults (15%).
  • AANHPIs account for the largest proportion of all tuberculosis and chronic hepatitis B cases in California, with major cases among foreign-born populations.
