Gomez Measure To Protect Kids Passes Assembly

SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) was successful in calling upon the State Assembly to pass AB 790, which will assure that child abuse reports are made by every mandated reporter.

This bill is critical in maintaining safety among all children. "There is a loophole in the law, which creates a situation where not every mandated reporter is required to report the abuse, suspected abuse or neglect of a child," said Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez. "Our children's wellbeing far outweighs the cost of any bill, and we cannot allow any 'Sandusky' child abuse incidents to go unreported."

Sacramento - Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) was successful in pressing Assembly Bill 790 through the Assembly Public Safety Committee – an important first step in closing a dangerous loophole in the law that allows those entrusted with children's safety to avoid filing reports of child abuse or neglect.

Assemblyman Gomez opened with a statement that "Reporting abuse of a child should not be an option. Every incident of child abuse, sexual abuse or neglect should be reported to the proper authorities, regardless of how many people suspect or saw the abuse."

Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez to Chair Select Committee on Domestic Violence

SACRAMENTO –Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) has been named as the Chair of the Select Committee on Domestic Violence by Speaker John A. Pérez.  This comes at a most appropriate time, as just a few weeks ago the U.S. Senate passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), that among many other issues, focuses on the issue of domestic violence.

“Domestic Violence is not a private problem or a problem that should categorize one type of person”, said Assemblymember Gomez.  “Domestic violence affects women, men, teens, same sex couples and the elderly. I don’t believe we take this lightly as a society, however I do have concerns that we do not do enough to prevent these very personal acts of violence.”

Second measure will provide tax credit for guns turned in to buyback programs

Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Philip Y Ting (D – San Francisco) and Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) introduced legislation, AB 231,* today that will require gun owners to purchase liability insurance to cover the cost of damage that may be caused by the weapon.

“The government requires liability insurance as a condition of operating a car – at the very least we should impose a similar requirement for owning a firearm,” Ting said.  “The cost to society of destruction by guns is currently being born collectively by all of us, and not by those who, either through carelessness or malice, cause the destruction.  It is time to change that equation so that those who cause the harm pay the costs.”

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) calls upon the Legislature to pass a resolution in support of Senator Dianne Feinstein's efforts to pass a National Assault Weapons Ban.

"There have been way too many shootings involving assault weapons including the December 14th, 2012 Newtown, Connecticut school shooting," said Assemblymember Gomez. "I want to ask my colleagues to join with me and support Assembly Resolution 5 to urge Congress to act now to protect our children and our communities from gun violence. We cannot allow another mass shooting to occur," added Assemblymember Gomez."

Assemblymember Gomez vows to fix unfair law that denies unmarried women protections against rapists

(Sacramento) Outraged at a ruling that could allow a rapist to walk free, Assembly member Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) announced today that he will be introducing legislation to reform what he termed as a tragedy against women on the par as the Italian Judge who said a woman wasn't raped because she wore tight jeans.

In a recently released judicial decision a rape conviction of a California man who pretending to be a sleeping woman's boyfriend has been overturned, citing that an arcane law from 1872 doesn't protect unmarried women in such cases.

Gomez Takes Oath as Newest Assemblymember for 51st District

Vows to make jobs, schools, and safety top priorities in office

(SACRAMENTO) -  Jimmy Gomez (D- East Los Angeles) was sworn in as the Assemblymember for the 51st Assembly District, which includes East Los Angeles and the neighborhoods of Glassell Park, El Sereno, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, Elysian Park, Mt. Washington, Atwater Village, and Silver Lake. The ceremony was held on the Assembly Floor at the State Capitol.

“It is an honor to serve the constituents of the 51st Assembly District” said Gomez. “As the child of immigrants, I benefited immensely from the opportunity to get a good education. I want to ensure that every student and every resident in California can take advantage of these same opportunities. I want to restore funding to our schools and community colleges to help students succeed and workers get the skills they need for quality jobs.”

The oath of office was administered by the Honorable, Mary Lou Villar de Longoria, Judge, Los Angeles Superior Court.
