ESPN Radio 710’s “Mason & Ireland Show” hosted Assembly Member Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), a principle co-author of the legislation to pave the way for a new football stadium and convention center in downtown Los Angeles.
The Legislature passed SB 292, which would advance development of the new stadium. The $1.5 billion deal, which does not include any taxpayer dollars, will also renovate the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The bill now heads to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
“This bill is more than just football,” Bradford said. “It’s an overall jobs opportunity bill that will drive additional economic benefit downtown.”
Economic analyses of the stadium proposal by Anschutz Entertainment Group and the City of Los Angeles forecast the project will create thousands of temporary and permanent jobs from construction and operation of the stadium. Those same analyses predict substantial financial benefits for the hotel and restaurant industries from a significant increase in convention center activities.
“If it was just football in and of itself it probably would not be a high priority,” Bradford explained. “This is an economic stimulus for local and small businesses in southern California and the L.A. region.”
The proposal is supported by the Environmental Resources Defense Council, the California League of Conservation Voters, and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.
Assembly Member Bradford was on the six-member working group in the Assembly which studied the issue.
Assemblymember Steven C. Bradford represents the 51st Assembly District, comprised of the cities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Lawndale, and Inglewood, and the communities of Athens, Lennox, South Central LA, Westchester, Willowbrook, Playa Vista, and parts of Ladera Heights and West Compton.
