In order to get the desired degree, veteran students often sign up for college classes in subjects that they have already mastered while in the military. The adequacy of military training for college credit has already been recognized by the American Council on Education. Nevertheless, few reputable colleges will provide college credit for veterans based on prior expertise. Change, however, is starting to take shape across the nation.
On the 14th of July, 2011, Texas governor Rick Perry signed into action Senate Bill 1736, nicknamed "College Credit for Heroes." This bill orders the creation of a pilot program that studies the integration of veterans into the academic environment at an accelerated level, by allowing enhanced opportunities to receive college credit for training received while in military service.
