Improving College Readiness and Degree Attainment in the Inland Empire

Oversight Hearing of the Assembly Higher Education Committee
Assembly Member Jose Medina, Chair

Thursday, September 22, 2016
9 - 11 a.m.

University of California, Riverside
Alumni & Visitors Center
3701 Canyon Crest Drive
Riverside, CA 92507

The Higher Education Committee will review existing education programs and partnerships for students and discuss strengths and challenges in ensuring all IE students, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status are prepared to attend college and attain pertinent college degrees and certificates.

Research shows that California’s baccalaureate attainment rate has not kept pace with the rest of the nation.  Sadly, California ranks 45th among the states in terms of bachelor’s degrees conferred relative to the college age population.  More specific to the Inland Empire (IE), research shows that the IE has a significantly lower postsecondary education attainment rate and lesser levels of college readiness among its high school graduates compared to the rest of California.

In the highly diverse IE, this low ranking presents a great challenge in maintaining educational equity for all students and has profound long-term consequences for all communities within the IE.

I hope this public oversight hearing will promote continued discussion over an important issue affecting our community.
