Medina, Bocanegra, and V.M. Pérez Joint Statement on the Governor’s May Revise and Enterprise Zones

SACRAMENTO—In a united effort, Chairman Jose Medina, with the Assembly Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee, and Chairman Raul Bocanegra, with the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee, along with past Assembly Jobs Chairman, V.M. Pérez, released the following joint statement today regarding Governor Brown’s May Revision and Enterprise Zones.

“Today’s May Revision to the budget makes clear that we are in the process of an economic recovery,” said Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside), Chair of the Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee. “I recognize that enterprise zones remain one of the last tools for California businesses and believe if implemented properly, will continue to serve as a catalyst for the transformation of low-income and historically underserved neighborhoods. The legislature has been engaging in long-term discussions for many years regarding enterprise zones to ensure they work more efficiently for local residents facing barriers to employment. The May Revise broadens that discussion and puts new incentives on the table.

Assemblymember Medina Backs Blueprint for Responsible Budget

Assembly Democrats’ Plan Features 10% Reserve

SACRAMENTO- Assemblymember Medina (D-Riverside) today announced his support for new budget guidelines put forward by Democrats in the State Assembly. The guidelines—known as a “Blueprint for a Responsible Budget” feature a 10% rainy day reserve as well as measures to strengthen the middle class.

“As Chair of the Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee, I recognize that small businesses are the core of California’s economy,” said Medina. “It is imperative that we continue to invest in small businesses, strengthen the middle class, and increase access to education for all Californians.”

Assemblymember Jose Medina Honors the Teachers of the Year for the 61st Assembly District

SACRAMENTO –In recognition of the Day of the Teacher, Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) honored five teachers who have been recognized as the 61st Assembly District Teachers of the Year for their outstanding service as educators in the community (in alphabetical order): Esther Andrews, Blanca Garcia, Lan Noble, Richard Steffen, and Tommy Stokes.

“As a former educator for over 35 years, I am proud to recognize these teachers for their service to the community,” Medina said. “They exemplify the hard work all teachers do every day.”

Assemblymember Medina Joins California Medical Association to Address Funding the UC Riverside School of Medicine

SACRAMENTO—Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) joined fellow legislators, medical students, and physicians to discuss the doctor and workforce shortage in California. To address this challenge, Assemblymember Medina authored AB 27, which will allocate $15 million annually in state funds to operate and expand the UC Riverside School of Medicine.

“Providing state funding for the UC Riverside School of Medicine is crucial in our efforts to ensuring the Inland Empire receives access to affordable and basic health care,” said Assemblymember Medina. “There is currently a shortage of doctors in the region and with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act this emergency situation is going to turn catastrophic if we do not act now.”

Assemblymember Medina's Bill to Support UC Riverside School of Medicine Passes the Assembly Higher Education Committee with Bipartisan Support

SACRAMENTO - The Assembly Higher Education Committee passed AB 27 with bipartisan support today, a bill authored by Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) that will allocate $15 million annually in state funds to operate and expand the UC Riverside School of Medicine.

"Today's approval to fully fund the UC Riverside School of Medicine by the Assembly Higher Education Committee is the first step towards ensuring the Inland Empire region receives access to affordable and basic health care," said Medina. "This bill would allow students to study medicine in our community and continue on to practice and serve the needs of our region."

Assemblymember Medina Supports Legislation to Reduce Delays in Business Filings

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) today announced support for Assembly Bill 113 (AB 113) which will reduce unnecessary delays for California businesses when filing documents with the Secretary of State's office. AB 113 passed the Assembly today and will continue on to the state Senate.

"The passage of AB 113 will shorten the time it takes to open a new business," said Medina. "As we recover from the recession, it is important to streamline a process that has become unreasonable at best and encourage the creation of innovative new businesses."

RIVERSIDE –Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) today announced five women who have been recognized by the Latino Network as their 2013 honorees (in alphabetical order): Luz Maria Ayala, Elena Carrasco, Teresa Flores López, Linda Salinas Thompson, and Rosa Elena Sahagún, they were honored at the 16th Annual Celebración de la Mujer luncheon. The event commemorates the contribution and accomplishments of Latinas in the Inland Empire.

Assemblymember Medina, Senator Roth Urgent Push For UC Riverside Medical School Funding

SACRAMENTO –Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) and Senator Richard Roth (D-Riverside) testified today before the Senate education budget subcommittee. They delivered a joint letter requesting an allocation of $15 million needed to fund the UC Riverside School of Medicine.

The Senator and Assemblymember’s urgent request was made as the rapidly growing Inland Southern California region continues to be identified as having the most severe shortage of primary care doctors in all of the United States.
