Physician Shortage Nearing Critical Levels, Funding Needed for UC Riverside Med School

(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside), a host of medical students, other lawmakers and California Medical Association representatives gathered on the steps of the State Capitol to show their support for a package of legislation designed to deal with the growing physician shortage in California. Assemblymember Medina's bill, AB 27, would provide $15 million annually for the UC Riverside School of Medicine, set to open its doors in August of 2013. "Providing state funding for the UC Riverside School of Medicine is crucial in our efforts to ensuring the Inland Empire receives access to affordable and basic health care," said Assemblymember Medina. UC Riverside School of Medicine Legislation Passes Committee with Bipartisan Support

(Sacramento) - The Assembly Higher Education Committee has approved AB 27, a bill authored by Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) that will allocate $15 million in state funds to operate and expand the UC Riverside School of Medicine. "Today's approval to fund the UC Riverside School of Medicine by the Assembly Higher Education Committee is the first step towards ensuring the Inland Empire region receives access to affordable and basic health care," said Medina. "This bill would allow students to study medicine in our community and continue on to practice and serve the needs of our region." Assemblymember Medina Adjourns in Memory of Fallen Riverside Police Officer

(Sacramento) -- California State Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside) adjourned the Assembly in memory of Riverside Police Officer Michael Crain. Officer Crain was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty. Officer Crain was on the Riverside Police Department for 11 years. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
