(Sacramento) Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins made the following statement on today’s release of Governor Jerry Brown’s “May Revise,” a revised budget proposal for fiscal year 2014 which reflects recent economic factors:

“I applaud Governor Brown’s cautious and balanced approach to state finances which prioritizes our investment in the future through education and healthcare.  This approach keeps our promise to help those with the greatest need, while also maintaining our focus on steps that will pay off in terms of prosperity for many generations to come.  It is also consistent with the principles outlined in the Assembly Democratic Caucus’ Blueprint for a Responsible Budget, released last week – fiscal responsibility, strengthening the middle class, and delivering effective, efficient services for Californians.

The Governor and the Legislature have worked together over the past few years to achieve today’s balanced and stable budget.  We have done this through tough and painful cuts that reduced safety net services.  The voters’ approval of the temporary taxes in Proposition 30 has also relieved the strain on state coffers as we slowly recover from the Great Recession.  I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues to review the details of the Governor’s proposal as we move toward adoption of a balanced, on-time budget by June 15.”

Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins receives the Cornucopia Award from California Women in Agriculture for promoting dialogue between urban areas and agriculture.

(Sacramento) Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins of San Diego was honored today with the Cornucopia Award from California Women in Agriculture, http://www.cawomen4ag.com/ .  The award is given annually to an urban legislator who has demonstrated a willingness to enter into dialogue with agriculture.

“While San Diego is well known as the second largest city in California, what is less well known is that agriculture is a key economic engine for San Diego County,” says Atkins.  “I am proud to receive this award and to play a role in enhancing the partnership between urban and rural California, especially by supporting the role of women in agriculture.”

(Sacramento) – The federal sequester and how it may affect military bases in and around San Diego was one of many topics discussed with California State Assemblymember Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) during an interview Charter Communication’s, “California Edition.”  Assemblymember Atkins talked about her determination to protect veterans and military families, as well as some of her recent legislation.  Hear more in this Assembly Assets Video.

Sacramento - Assemblymember Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) was the guest recently on the Time Warner Cable program Local Edition. Host Steve Swatt asked the Majority Floor Leader about the state’s improving state budget situation and veteran’s issues.

(San Diego) – Assemblymember Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), the Leadership Team and collaborative partners of the Campaign to End Homelessness in Downtown San Diego successfully housed one hundred homeless persons from the streets of Downtown San Diego in time for the winter holidays. Eighty-six (86) of these formerly homeless persons were enrolled and housed in just three days. This effort, known as the Campaign’s “Blitz Week”, institutionalized unprecedented coordination between federal, county, and city partners to leverage resources. Homelessness, Coastal Protection, Historic Preservation Reflect Priorities

(Sacramento) Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins was appointed by Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez to serve in three key positions on behalf of the State Assembly. The Assembly Select Committee on Homelessness, which Atkins has chaired for the past two years, was renewed for the current two-year legislative session, with Atkins continuing to serve as its chair. Atkins will also represent the Assembly on the Ocean Protection Council (OPC), a position she held during the 2010-2012 legislative session. The OPC is a state body that focuses on protecting California's ocean and coastal ecosystems. Atkins was also appointed as one of two Assembly representatives on the California Historic and Cultural Endowment, a program of the California State Library that provides grants to preserve historic artifacts that are important to our state's cultural legacy.

(Sacramento) – In this Democratic weekly radio address, Assemblymember Tony Atkins (D-San Diego), Majority Leader of the Assembly, discusses the 40th Anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, a landmark ruling ensuring the right of every woman to have control over her own body. Ms. Atkins also discusses her legislation to expand the number of qualified and trained medical professionals who can provide reproductive care, including, abortion services, in California.

(San Diego)  Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins today introduced legislation to protect the tax exemption of Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) thrift stores on military bases.  AB 163 extends the exemption on sales and use tax for these stores, which are volunteer-operated establishments offering gently-used donated items to military base communities.   Their proceeds support financial literacy programs and emergency financial assistance for active and retired members of the Navy and Marines.

(San Diego) California Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins of San Diego applauded today's decision by the state Public Utilities Commission to reject a proposal to immediately allow SDG&E to pass the costs of the 2007 San Diego wildfires onto ratepayers and instead to have an open deliberative process regarding apportioning those costs.

At its meeting today, the PUC considered a proposal, only made public yesterday, to pass wildfire costs in excess of insurance coverage along to ratepayers. Instead, the PUC stated that following the Commission's standard, case-by-case, process is SDGE's more appropriate avenue. This process includes adequate notice, public hearings and the opportunity for all interested parties to submit analysis and recommendations.
