SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Campus Climate, announced today that the committee will receive progress updates from state universities on efforts to improve the climate for students on their campuses. The hearing will held in Sacramento on Wednesday, August 3rd, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, in Capitol Room 127. The public is encouraged to attend.
A representative from San Jose State University will provide an update on its efforts to promote a safer and more welcoming campus nearly three years after an African American student was the subject of racially motivated harassment and assault by classmates. Representatives from Humboldt State University and the University of California, San Diego will brief the committee on their efforts to alleviate the problem of food insecurity and homelessness among the student populations on their campuses.
(San Diego, CA)- Assemblymember Dr. Shirley N. Weber (D-79AD) recognized more than 350 students of the 79th Assembly District for their perfect attendance during the 2015-2016 school year. The event was held at SeaWorld on Friday, June 24, 2016. This was the second recognition ceremony resulting from Assemblymember Weber’s perfect school attendance challenge. The challenge was to encourage state and local action to improve the overall health, safety, and well-being of students, to encourage and improve school attendance and combat chronic absenteeism. She hopes to spread this recognition of student and parent achievement to Assembly Districts across San Diego, and all of California. Dr. Weber authored legislation making September “School Attendance Awareness Month,” which was signed into law by Governor Brown in 2014. Learn more in the Assembly Access video.
SACRAMENTO – AB 2548, authored by Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber (D-San Diego), which would establish a statewide accountability system for California schools based on multiple measures of student performance, was approved by the State Assembly earlier today. The bill will be heard next in the Senate Education Committee.

SACRAMENTO – Amid growing concern about the disproportionate growth of middle management at California State University, Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) will request a key legislative committee to direct the State Auditor to investigate the system’s hiring and compensation practices.
The request will be made at a State Capitol hearing of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) on Wednesday, May 25 at 9:30 am in Capitol Room 126.
(San Diego) - California State Assemblymember Dr. Shirley N. Weber (D-San Diego) convened the third Select Committee on “Campus Climate” hearing at UCLA on Friday, May 6, 2016. The issues focused on “Freedom of Expression” and “Freedom of Speech” that impacts diverse California campus student life. The committee cross-examined existing campus policies and proposals that successfully address issues of freedom of expression. Assembly Committee members Bloom and Medina were also present. SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Campus Climate, has announced that the committee will hold an informational hearing on Friday, May 6th, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the James West Alumni Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Students and the public are invited to attend.
The topic of the hearing is freedom of expression on California’s publicly-funded college and university campuses.
(Sacramento) – California State Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) convened a legislative briefing at the State Capitol in Sacramento to address her legislation, Assembly Bill 2590 – the Restorative Justice Act. Instead of relying solely on incareration, restorative justice allows an offender to accept responsibility for a crime and try to make amends. AB 2590 is a modest step to shift away from punishment only and encourages the Department of Corrections to provide opportunities for education and rehabilitation for all inmates, not just non-violent offenders.
