(Sacramento) – Assemblymember and Vice-chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, Doctor Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) and the State Assembly honored civil rights hero Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior during a special ceremony on the floor of the State Assembly. “I am accustomed to the roller coasters of life. And I understood as a child that two steps forward and one step back makes me still one step ahead,” Doctor Weber said. “I will not be deterred because of the environment that I find myself in. (Sacramento) – Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), a member of the Assembly Special Committee on the Office of the Attorney General, voted to recommend that the full Assembly confirm Congressman Xavier Becerra as Attorney General of California. “I’m very impressed with your resume,” said Doctor Weber. “I’m very pleased that someone who has the depth and the understanding and the character of this state is being asked to serve as Attorney General.”

(San Diego, CA)-Assemblymember Dr. Shirley N. Weber (D-79) held her fourth Annual Health Fair and Back to School Kickoff on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at the Encanto Boys & Girls Club. Community health organizations and civic groups provided health screenings, school supplies and backpacks to children who will be attending school in the Fall. Assemblymember Weber also encouraged perfect attendance to promote academic achievement and make students eligible to receive her Perfect Attendance award and receive a day at SeaWorld in June, 2017. (San Diego, CA)- Assemblymember Dr. Shirley N. Weber (D-79AD) recognized more than 350 students of the 79th Assembly District for their perfect attendance during the 2015-2016 school year. The event was held at SeaWorld on Friday, June 24, 2016. This was the second recognition ceremony resulting from Assemblymember Weber’s perfect school attendance challenge. The challenge was to encourage state and local action to improve the overall health, safety, and well-being of students, to encourage and improve school attendance and combat chronic absenteeism. She hopes to spread this recognition of student and parent achievement to Assembly Districts across San Diego, and all of California. (San Diego) - California State Assemblymember Dr. Shirley N. Weber (D-San Diego) convened the third Select Committee on “Campus Climate” hearing at UCLA on Friday, May 6, 2016. The issues focused on “Freedom of Expression” and “Freedom of Speech” that impacts diverse California campus student life. The committee cross-examined existing campus policies and proposals that successfully address issues of freedom of expression. Assembly Committee members Bloom and Medina were also present. (Sacramento) – California State Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) convened a legislative briefing at the State Capitol in Sacramento to address her legislation, Assembly Bill 2590 – the Restorative Justice Act. Instead of relying solely on incareration, restorative justice allows an offender to accept responsibility for a crime and try to make amends. AB 2590 is a modest step to shift away from punishment only and encourages the Department of Corrections to provide opportunities for education and rehabilitation for all inmates, not just non-violent offenders.
