(Sacramento) - Today, Assemblymember Gilbert Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), along with students and education leaders who have been advocating in favor of AB 131, the final portion of the "California Dream Act", are very pleased with the historic decision by the Senate Appropriations Committee to release AB 131 from the suspense file. AB 131 now goes to the full Senate for a vote.
Assemblymember Cedillo states, "The Senate Appropriations Committee made history by releasing AB 131, the final portion of the California Dream Act from the suspense file. We have already established that these students have a right to an education; they have been admitted to our universities. The members of the Appropriations Committee demonstrated their commitment to help foster the development of future architects, doctors, teachers, scientists and scholars who are crucial to the success of the California economy. We look forward to the full Senate "Completing the Dream" by voting to pass AB 131, the final portion of California Dream Act and sending it to the Governor, who has already signed AB 130, the first portion of the California Dream Act. By voting to pass AB 131, the Senate will help increase the earning potential of these students, which helps all of us by contributing to our tax base."
The California DREAM Act, first introduced by Cedillo in 2006, was introduced as two bills in January of this year. The first bill AB 130, which was signed by Governor Brown, will allow students that meet the in-state tuition requirements to apply for and receive scholarships derived from non-state funds. AB 131 would allow students that meet the in-state tuition requirements to apply and receive financial aid at California public colleges and universities. The types of financial aid these students would be eligible for include: 1) Board of Governors (BOG) Fee Waiver 2) Institutional Student Aid: Student aid program administered by the attending college or university (i.e. State University Grant, UC Grant) and 3) Cal Grants.
