SACRAMENTO—Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) released the following statement regarding SeaWorld ending their captive orca breeding program:

“I was an early supporter of Assemblymember Richard Bloom’s bill to protect orcas from captive breeding and performing in shows, so I’m very pleased that SeaWorld has seen the light and is ending these immoral practices. Orcas are social, intelligent beings and we should do everything we can to help them flourish around the world. Assemblymember Bloom deserves our thanks for his leadership on this issue, and so do the activists who have been relentless on behalf of these amazing creatures.”

SACRAMENTO—At a ceremony inside the Assembly chamber, surrounded by family, friends and dignitaries from around the state, Assemblymember Anthony Rendon was sworn in today as the 70th Speaker of the California State Assembly.

Speaker Rendon (D-Paramount) took the oath of office alongside his spouse, Annie Lam, and his parents Tom and Gloria Rendon. The 69th Speaker of the Assembly, Assemblymember Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) performed the oath.

In his swearing-in remarks, Speaker Rendon pledged to focus on the issues of poverty, oversight and participation, saying it is unacceptable for almost 2.5 million children to be living in poverty in California, that state agencies – including the Legislature – must be accountable to Californians, and that more Californians should take part in the political process, especially in communities with great needs.

Speaker Atkins: California Leads Again

Submit to FacebookSubmit to TwitterSubmit to LinkedIn
statement regarding the passage of legislation addressing tobacco and e-cigarette usage:

"Studies have shown that Californians spend more than $9.8 billion treating the effects of tobacco use every year and $3.5 billion is billed directly to Medi-Cal. Raising the legal smoking age will help lower the number of young people who use tobacco, and that means healthier Californians and lower costs for taxpayers. Advocates have said this is the most sweeping tobacco regulation in 50 years. California led the way for the nation with a workplace ban, and the restrictions in bars and restaurants. We are leading the way again."

Information about the Second Extraordinary Session bills related to tobacco can be found here.

(Sacramento) – Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) released the following statement regarding Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s State of the State address:

“Clearly the state of the state is better than it has been in years. And, as I’ve said, that’s thanks to voters and to the partnership between the Governor and Legislative Democrats. What we heard in the Governor’s State of the State address this morning is that there is plenty of room for that partnership to keep right on delivering for the people of California.

“Assembly Democrats, who led the effort to create the state’s Rainy Day Fund, support the Governor’s call for responsible budgeting, and the Governor has shown his willingness to make meaningful budget improvements, like adding the state EITC to last year’s budget.

SACRAMENTO— Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) and Speaker-Elect Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) have released the following statement regarding the potential for gun violence bills to come before the Legislature this session:

“There has been much discussion about what the California Legislature will do on the issue of gun violence. The Assembly will be working with our colleagues in the State Senate to advance legislation that prevents gun violence and keeps our communities safe, while balancing Second Amendment rights. The recent Field Poll showed broad bipartisan support in California for common sense measures to keep firearms out of the wrong hands. Too many lives have been lost and too many families have been shattered by gun violence for us not to act. When so many have fallen, the responsibility is on us to stand up and do what’s right.”
