LOS ANGELES – While participating in a Los Angeles forum yesterday honoring prominent Jews and Latinos, Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) gave remarks introducing Israeli President Shimon Peres.
The Speaker called the Israeli President “a leading voice for peace and prosperity, profoundly shaping the world in which we live.”
Speaker Pérez also shared details about Los Angeles’ rich Jewish history, including discussing the Breed Street Shul, one of the oldest synagogues on the West Coast, and the Boyle Heights neighborhood, which was a predominantly Jewish community for many years in the early decades of the 20th century.
The Speaker discussed the historic coalitions built between Latinos and Jews in California as they joined forces to help elect leaders that share common values between the two communities.
Speaker Pérez and President Peres also met earlier this Fall in Israel as part of ongoing efforts to build economic and cultural ties between California and Israel.
