SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblymember Lisa Calderon (D-Whittier) joined the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and the Los Angeles County Sanitation District (LACSD) to announce $80 million in state funding that will go towards the Pure Water Southern California (Pure Water) project.
Assemblymember Calderon championed the $80 million allocation towards the Pure Water project in the 2022-23 State Budget. This effort will ensure greater regional water reliability and flexibility.
“The climate crisis has strained our region’s water supply,” states Assemblymember Calderon. “It’s imperative we continue investing in projects focused on addressing our water needs. I am pleased to support the work of the Metropolitan Water District and the Los Angeles County Sanitation District in advancing the Pure Water Southern California project. This effort will provide a more resilient, sustainable water infrastructure system for our local communities.”
The Pure Water project is expected to produce up to 150 million gallons of water daily, enough to serve more than 500,000 homes. Purified water from the facility will be delivered via approximately 60 miles of new pipelines to the region’s groundwater basins, industrial facilities, and two of MWD’s water treatment plants.
The surge in funding for the Pure Water project has the potential to spur development as early as 2025.
