Assembly bill allowing Sacramento Regional Transit’s ballot measures to target its user base signed by Governor

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO- AB 1052, which gives Sacramento Regional Transit Agency (SacRT) the chance to propose ballot initiatives only to an affected group of residents within its service area, has been signed by Governor Newsom.

SacRT provides transit services to the majority of Sacramento County, offering bus, light rail, microtransit, and ADA paratransit options to the Capitol region. Unfortunately, recent ballot measures for future transit projects were unsuccessful partly due to the fact that some of the voters receiving SacRT’s ballot measures do not see a direct benefit to the transit projects.

“Giving SacRT the flexibility to tailor its ballot measure to a portion of its service area makes better sense,” said Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. “AB 1052 will provide more accurate voting on projects and help improve transportation for those residents who utilize SacRT’s service the most.”

A measure would still require a two-thirds vote of the electorate to pass and cannot split the city or unincorporated region.
