Assemblymember Hart Seeks Legislative Oversight Hearing on Homelessness

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Assemblymember Gregg Hart (D-Santa Barbara), Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, announced his intention to conduct an oversight hearing in response to the State Auditor's report, released today, that highlighted deficiencies in the state's data collection and monitoring of the cost-effectiveness of its homelessness programs. The audit revealed the state, and the two local governments that were evaluated, have not fully tracked the allocation of funding, or assessed the efficiency of programs to address homelessness.

"With billions of dollars being invested in California to address the homelessness crisis, we must ensure that every dollar is spent effectively and with measurable impact. Today's audit report highlights the need for better data collection and a more transparent approach to homelessness funding," said Assemblymember Gregg Hart. "As Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, I intend to convene an oversight hearing to further investigate the audit results, and evaluate any progress made to implement the audit recommendations."

I would like to thank Senator Cortese for requesting this audit and for his leadership on this important topic.  Additionally, I want to thank the State Auditor for his efforts.

The audit is available on the State Auditor's website here.

Gregg Hart represents the California Assembly's 37th Assembly District, which includes Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, Buellton, Solvang, Lompoc, Guadalupe, Santa Maria, Orcutt, and Nipomo. He currently serves as the Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and Assembly Select Committee on the Nonprofit Sector.
