Asm Wood honors Nurse Practitioner Surani Hayre-Kwan as AD 2’s 2020 Woman of the Year

Thursday, September 10, 2020

SACRAMENTO–Today Assemblymember Jim Wood (D-Santa Rosa) will present Surani Hayre-Kwan, a nurse practitioner (NP), with a resolution honoring her as Assembly District 2’s Woman of the Year. Every year each Assemblymember has the privilege of selecting someone to be honored who serves their community with dedication and distinction. The day typically includes personal recognition during the legislative session in the Assembly Chambers and a luncheon.

Hayre-Kwan serves as the Director for Professional Practice and Nursing Excellence for Sutter Health. She also practices at the Russian River Health Center in Guerneville.

“Due to the COVID-19 restrictions this year, we were unable to pull off that special day for Ms. Hayre-Kwan in the Capitol, but we’re trying to make up for it by presenting the resolution to her among her peers at the Russian River Health Center,” said Wood.

At Sutter she advances professional practice, provides leadership in professional development, education, and training for nursing and advanced practice clinicians. She has 25 years of healthcare experience in ambulatory and acute settings.

“Today, I’m recognizing your commitment, compassion and dedication to providing high-quality health care as a nurse practitioner to individuals living in the North Bay area. The Russian River Health Center and Sutter are very fortunate to have you as a family practice provider and educator.”

Hayre-Kwan has an 18-year history with California Association for Nurse Practitioners serving in board positions for more than 14 years as president, president-elect and conference chair and the health policy and practice committee. She has completed a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree at Samuel Merritt University, a Master’s of Science in Nursing and a Family Nurse Practitioner certificate at Sonoma State University. She is a nationally certified NP in Family Practice.

“I regret not being able to recognize you at the Capitol this year, but hope this smaller presentation among your peers is even more meaningful,” said Wood.

Wood is the author of AB 890, 2020 legislation that would permit nurse practitioners with practitioners with additional experience, national certification and examination to practice independently of a physician. That bill is awaiting consideration by Governor Gavin Newsom, who has until September 30 to pass or veto bills sent to him by the Legislature.
